About KDF

What is KDF?

KDF Process Media are high-purity, granulated copper and zinc-based alloys that treat water through a process based upon the principle of redox (oxidation-reduction). Originally, KDF was shorthand for Kinetic Degradation Fluxion. Basically, KDF creates zinc oxide in the cartridge, which helps stop bacteria from growing. It actually kills bacteria, and reduces harmful chlorine.

How KDF Filters Work

Water passes through a bed of pure KDF Media Technology. KDF Media is known to kill algae and fungi, control bacteria growth, remove chlorine, rust, unpleasant taste and lead, aluminum, mercury, arsenic. It conditions hardness minerals and removes a spectrum of other inorganic impurities from water. As the water makes contact with the KDF particles the Redox reaction takes place, removing such impurities as minerals, metals, dissolved oxygen and inorganic materials. The KDF itself creates a miniature electrolytic cell within the spaces between each particle, the zinc acting as the anode and copper acting as the cathode within contaminants. Impurities found in water pass through this electrolytic cell and are attracted to the surface of the KDF particles, where they adhere. Other non-metal impurities react with the KDF to either become oxidized or reduced and subsequently removed from the treated water.

Stage 1 – Mechanical Filtration

Mechanical filtration is achieved when the dimension of the particle is larger than the hole in the filter. This form of filtration removes suspended particles such as: silt, sediment, sand, rust, dirt, and other undissolved matter.

Stage 2 – Electro-chemical Oxidation-Reduction Process

In the next stage, the water passes through a bed of media made of a special high-purity alloy blend of two dissimilar metals: copper and zinc KDF-55D. It must be placed here before the carbon to protect the carbon from bacteria growth. The media, patented in 1987 by KDF Fluid Treatment, Inc., is a major advancement in water treatment technology that works on the electro-chemical and spontaneous-oxidation-reduction (redox) principles. Chlorine is instantaneously and almost inexhaustibly oxidized.

KDF Filter Advantages

  • Reduces a wide range of contaminants including heavy metals
  • Leaves healthful minerals intact, producing a tastier mineral water
  • KDF neutralizes chlorine
  • Low maintenance
  • Lower operating costs (about 1 cent per gallon)
  • KDF media inhibits bacteria growth within the unit, and uses no silver

Benefits of KDF Process Media

  • Effectively reduces chlorine and heavy metals and controls micro-organizms
  • Are available in four granular styles, each designed for a specific need
  • Outperform silver impregnated carbons
